That’s amazing! If you’re thinking about running for President for 2025-2026, this article is here to give you a sneak peek into what to expect, the exciting changes ahead, and why this could be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
Leading the Union – What’s It All About?
As President, you’re the elected leader of the Students' Union, representing all 14,000 students at LSBU. Sounds like a lot, right? Don’t worry! You’ll have an incredible full-time staff team supporting you every step of the way, ensuring you can focus on what really matters—being the voice of the student body.
Day to day, your role involves providing the senior management team and union staff with the student perspective on key issues. Your insight is invaluable because you are the one that studied at LSBU, and you understand the real challenges and experiences of your fellow students. Your voice is powerful, and you’ll use it to make meaningful changes that benefit everyone.
Stepping Into Leadership
Beyond the daily representation, you’ll also be a member of the LSBU Board of Governors and various university working groups. These are spaces where you can really shine and develop crucial leadership skills. At first, sitting in these high-level meetings might feel a little daunting, but trust me everyone is genuinely excited to have you there! Your fresh perspective is exactly what they need.
Now, I won’t sugarcoat it—there’s a lot of prep work involved. Some board papers can be over 200 pages long (yes, really), and it’s your job to read and understand them before each meeting. So, if you’re not a fan of long reading lists now, don’t worry—you’ll soon develop ways to manage and even enjoy it (well, most of the time!).
A Role That Shapes Your Future
Let’s be real—this role is a big responsibility. It takes effort, dedication, and resilience. But it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences you can have, equipping you with invaluable skills for your future career. Whether it’s leadership, public speaking, strategic thinking, or negotiation, you’ll leave this role with a skill set that will set you apart in any industry.
