Students who are a member of a community can become Community Volunteers. You must be a current student and be part of the community you want to volunteer for. Students who have faced a disciplinary process either with us or the university may not be considered to be a community volunteer.
Roles that students can take on include:
- Suggesting, planning and delivering events
- Social media content creation and posting
- Promotional materials creation and displaying around campus
- Supporting events
- Running a stall at Fresher/Refreshers etc. events to promote the community
Here are some frequently asked questions about the role:
What is a community?
Communities are your way of meeting other people with the same interests as you. This could be finding others who are in the same course as you, are part of the same faith, share hobbies, or are interested in celebrating different cultural traditions. Best of all? It's completely free to join!
How does it work?
When you join a community, you will automatically be sent a link to join the community WhatsApp group. Here you’ll find all the other community members and this will be your chance to get to know each other! The SU will put on some great, guaranteed events for you all to enjoy and bring you closer together as a group!
Can I suggest events for my community?
YES! We would love you to! If you have any suggestions, please feel free to fill out the form located on your community page. You can find the full list here. Alternatively you can share your ideas in your Community’s WhatsApp group.
Can I get involved with running the community?
Absolutely! We have lots of voluntary community roles you can take on. You can contribute as much or little time as you can and only when it suits you. This means that if you’re really busy with an assignment one week but have more free time the next then we can look after your Community for you during the busier times.
How much say do I have in my community?
These communities are all set up by us but for YOU! We really value and encourage your input and time when it’s to your community so you tell us what you’d like to see and we’ll do our best to make it happen.
What can I expect from the SU?
We’ll support you with your event and community ideas by helping your ideas become a reality! We’ll take all the boring bits so we can work together on putting on some amazing events.
What does the SU expect from me?
We first ask you to sign the Community Volunteer agreement and let us know how much time you’re able to commit and what you’d like to do as a volunteer. Some examples include:
-Helping organise events
-Attending events as a volunteer
-Creating content
-Creating posters and marketing material
-Running stalls at events to promote the community (e.g. freshers fair)
How do I volunteer?
You can register your interest by emailing us at opportunities@lsbsu.org. We’ll then email you over the Community Volunteer agreement. You can volunteer as much or as little time as you can as well as shaping it around your studies - whether you’re on campus a lot or not.
What are the benefits of volunteering?
Volunteering in a community is a great way to learn new skills and meet new people! You will receive some volunteer training as well as guidance and support with event organisation and promotional material creation. As well as it being a great addition to your CV!
